📢ATTN: University of Toronto students📢 Check out some of the in-person/virtual workshops that UofT offers to help you optimize your student life 👇 School-Based Workshops What are they? On-campus workshops are educational sessions offered by various departments and organizations within a university. These workshops cover a wide range of topics, from academic skills and career development to personal growth and wellness. How can they benefit students? • Skill Development: Students can enhance their academic and professional skills, such as time management, research methods, resume writing, and interview techniques. • Networking Opportunities: Workshops provide a platform to connect with peers, faculty, and industry professionals. • Personal Growth: Workshops on topics like mental health, stress management, and leadership help students navigate personal challenges and build resilience. How to access them? Students can access on-campus workshops by signing up through their student portal (Folio/CLNx). Library Workshops What are they? Library workshops are educational sessions offered by the university library. These workshops focus on research skills, citation management, academic writing, and utilizing library resources effectively. How can they benefit students? • Research Proficiency: Students can learn how to navigate academic databases, conduct literature reviews, and find reliable sources for their assignments. • Academic Integrity: Workshops on citation management tools like Zotero and EndNote help students avoid plagiarism by properly citing sources. • Efficiency: Learning how to use library resources efficiently can save students time and improve the quality of their work. How to access them? Students can sign up for library workshops through the University of Toronto Library's website. These workshops are often free and may be available in person or online. Research Workshops What are they? Research workshops provide guidance on conducting academic research, including how to formulate research questions, design studies, analyze data, and write research papers. They often include training on using citation management tools and understanding research ethics. How can they benefit students? • Research Skills: Students gain practical skills in designing research projects, collecting and analyzing data, and presenting findings. • Academic Success: These workshops help students produce higher-quality research papers and theses, which can improve their grades and academic standing. • Preparation for Advanced Studies: For students considering graduate school, research workshops provide foundational skills that are essential for advanced academic work. How to access them? Research workshops can be found on Folio/CLNx. Career Workshops What are they? Workshops, info sessions, etc. that provide insight into future career paths. In my experience, they have panel-style events where professionals answered pre-determined questions on their careers. There was also a question period (where attendees asked questions). How can they benefit students? • Guidance: Students engage with professionals and receive guidance and ideas on what to do with their degree • Discover Next Steps: Students can discover careers and paths that they were not aware of • Prepare for Next Steps: Students can get help to prepare for various aspects of obtaining a job/starting their career (e.g., job search, networking, etc.) How to access them? Check out the Academic Advising & Career Centre's website, CLNx, and advertisements on campus to learn when these on-campus and/or virtual workshops run. Career workshops are open to current students and alumni. Written by: Chloe Gergi | UofT '26 Tayla Sylvester | UofT '25 #FirstYearSurvivalGuide

In this mindfulness exercise, we will focus on your senses. Before we begin, find a comfortable position and take a deep breath… Now, bring your attention to your surroundings… What do you see? Notice the colours, textures, and shapes around you. Allow your eyes to move slowly around the room, taking in each detail… Now, bring your attention to your sense of hearing. Listen carefully to the sounds around you... Can you hear the sound of the wind outside or the birds chirping? Can you hear the sound of a clock ticking, rain falling, or your neighbours rustling around? Next, notice the smells around you... Can you smell the scent of fresh flowers or the fragrance of incense? Can you smell something cooking, the aroma of tea, or the skin care product that you applied earlier? Now bring your attention to your sense of touch… Feel the texture of the floor beneath your feet, the warmth of the sun on your skin, the softness of a cushion, or the rush of warm air coming through your vents. Lastly, bring your attention to your sense of taste... Take a sip of your drink and notice its flavour. Allow your taste buds to savour the taste… By focusing on your senses, you bring your attention to the present moment, and fully experience the world around you… Remember to practice this sensory awareness exercise whenever you feel the need to slow down and reconnect with the present moment… Written By: Yiyi Wang Yiyi Wang is a 4th year PhD student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, focusing on the study of mindfulness and its implications for overall wellbeing. Let's begin the mindful eating exercise. Find a comfortable seated position… Take a deep breath in through your nose ... and exhale through your mouth… Begin by connecting to your breath and body. Feel your belly rise and fall with every breath. Feel your feet on the ground and recognize your experience in this moment… Notice any thoughts, sensations or emotions that you are experiencing… Tune into these sensations or emotions. Do you feel hungry, thirsty, or maybe full? What emotions are you feeling in this moment? If you were going to eat or drink something right now, what is your body hungry for? What is it thirsty for? Focus your attention and notice the sensations that give you this information… Now, bring your attention to the item of food that you have chosen… Imagine that you are seeing it for the first time… Notice the colour, shape, texture, and size. Is there anything else that you sense or feel in this moment? Next, take a small bite or sip and focus on the taste and texture of the food or drink in your mouth… Notice any sensations, such as sweetness, bitterness, or warmth… Take your time with each bite or sip, and try to savour the experience fully. Don't rush or multitask while eating - focus on the present moment. When you're finished, take a moment to reflect on the experience. How did it feel to eat or drink mindfully? Did you notice anything new or interesting about the food or drink? Connect again to your body and your breath and notice your experience in this moment… Written By; Yiyi Wang Yiyi Wang is a 4th year PhD student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, focusing on the study of mindfulness and its implications for overall wellbeing. Let's begin the mindful breathing exercise. Settle into a comfortable position. Once you are comfortable, soften your gaze in front of you. Take a deep breath in through your nose… and out through your mouth… Focus on long, deep breaths… Breathe in … and breathe out … feel your belly rise and fall with every breath. Think of each inhale as breathing in fresh, positive air and energy … and each exhale as releasing all of the stress in your body. Remember to breathe slowly and fully by inhaling … and exhaling … Now we’ll spend a minute continuing to focus solely on the sensation of your breath. When the mind wanders – as it does – practice bringing your attention back to your breath and your breathing pattern. If you noticed your mind wandering … this is ok and normal. Use your breath as an anchor to bring your awareness into the present moment. Breathe in that fresh air… and release all of the tension in your body as you exhale. Breathe in … breathe out … I hope this session has helped you ease up some built-up tension from your day. Whether you've done a body scan before or not, we can help you get started. Find a comfortable seated position. Begin by taking a few deep breaths to calm your mind and relax your body. Now, bring your attention to your feet. Do you notice any sensations? Are your feet noticeably warm? Or do they feel cool? Can you feel any tingling? Don't analyze or judge the sensations, just observe them. Now, scan your attention up your legs to your calves and knees. Do you notice any sensations here? Keep scanning up to your thighs, hips, and abdomen, paying attention to any areas of tightness or discomfort. Now, bring your attention up to your chest, shoulders, arms, and hands. Observe any sensations in those areas. Continue to scan your attention up to your neck, head, and face, noticing any sensations there. Do the sensations feel the same? Do you notice anything different? Now, take a few deep breaths and relax your entire body.   Finally, feel the weight of your body and the support of the earth beneath you. I hope this body scan meditation was helpful for you. Take a few moments to stretch and move your body, and then carry this feeling of relaxation and mindfulness with you as you go about your day. Why should you give your best while not aiming to be the best? Because being the best can represent a lot of different things for different people, and one person’s situation is not the same as the other. You might be a full-time student while the one standing next to you has to work part-time to achieve their academic degree. And this was my case. I had two part-time jobs while getting my master’s and managed to be top of my class. At the time, it was a proud accomplishment, but my mental health was in pieces and I’m still recovering from all that anxiety and the impact it had on my life. So, sometimes, being the best is not the best option. Be your best self, whatever that means to you. #StudentLifeTips Check out more of Adriana's tips and insights on how to study effectively, manage anxiety, and more, on her Instagram page!
