Mental Health & Rest

We are wrapping up our collab with the teams at Live Free Counselling & Consulting Services and Winrose Oasis Counselling Services with a message about mental health and rest

Mental Health & Sleep

  • Chronic sleep issues (sleep issues over time) can impact our mental health.

  • Mental health issues such as anxiety, depression have association with sleep issues.

  • Historically, sleeping problems were seen as a consequence of mental health issues, but growing evidence suggests that poor sleep may induce or exacerbate mental health issues, such as depression.

  • Sleep problems may become an added source of worry, creating anticipatory anxious feelings at bedtime that makes it harder to fall asleep.

  • Chronic sleep issues can cause irritability, fatigue, and decreased motivation and more.

  • Chronic sleep problems can be correlated with stress and mental health concerns.

Symptoms of sleep issues may include:

  • Difficulty falling asleep at night

  • Waking up during the night

  • Waking up too early

  • Not feeling well-rested after a night's sleep

  • Daytime tiredness or sleepiness

  • Irritability, depression or anxiety

  • Difficulty paying attention, focusing on tasks or remembering

  • Increased errors or accidents

  • Ongoing worries about sleep

If you notice the above symptoms over time, it is a good idea to check-in with your doctor, therapist and others on your support team.

What can I do to improve my bedtime routine and improve my mental health and wellbeing?

  1. Limit social media/screen time before bed

  2. Go to bed at the same/similar time each night

  3. Hot shower

  4. Turn down lights

  5. Jot down racing thoughts
