TEXT:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder, which is most commonly diagnosed in childhood, but tends to last into adulthood. It's most probably genetic, although other possible causes are being researched.
Its symptoms, most prominent of which are trouble directing attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness, are present 24/7, and make living your day-to-day life difficult.
Symptoms of ADHD include, but are not limited to:
- not being able to pay attention
- not being able to sit still
- making impulsive decisions
- making careless mistakes or taking unnecessary risks
- being forgetful, losing things frequently
- being easily excited over minor things
- being overly emotional and sensitive to rejection or failure
- talking "too much", too fast, too loud, or talking over people
- having millions of thoughts and ideas every second of the day, which might feel overwhelming and may cause forgetting what you were talking/thinking about
What ADHD is not:
-being lazy or an underachiever
-being stupid (most people with ADHD actually have a higher than average IQ!)
-being arrogant
-being raised wrong
There are many steps to diagnosing ADHD, but there are some general criteria.
ADHD is diagnosed when:
-you have at least 5 of the most important symptoms
-those symptoms are present all the time for a long period of time
-those symptoms are detrimental to your quality of life
